Problem & Motivation

Distributed water supply infrastructure and agricultural reservoirs suffer from irregular manual quality checks, unnoticed contamination events, and sudden pump burnouts due to dry running or line pressure bursts. Operators need real-time multi-parameter telemetry with autonomous local protective cut-offs and mobile remote management.

Role & Engineering Contributions

Summer R&D Intern under Prof. Aurobindo Routray at IIT Kharagpur. Integrated the multi-sensor array, wrote the ESP32 C++ firmware, designed the dedicated printed circuit board in EasyEDA, and developed the Flutter cross-platform mobile app.

System Architecture & Methodology

An ESP32-powered edge node samples an array of industrial sensors monitoring water flow rate, pressure, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and water temperature. Telemetry packets are broadcast over long-range LoRa radio to a central hub and synchronized with a Supabase cloud database. A mobile Flutter application receives real-time telemetry and sends push alerts via Firebase, while an on-board relay module controls pump motors autonomously based on programmed threshold conditions.

Implementation Details

Engineered a custom single-board PCB in EasyEDA incorporating regulated power rails, sensor input protection, LoRa module socketing, and optoisolated relay driver stages. Wrote firmware incorporating sensor calibration equations and fail-safe automated protection routines (such as instantaneous pump cutoff on low flow / dry run or pressure spikes) that function reliably even when cloud connectivity is unavailable. Built a responsive Flutter app featuring live sensor dials, historical trend charts, and manual control overrides.

Verified Results & Outcomes

Completed and validated the functional prototype during testing at IIT Kharagpur. Successfully maintained reliable long-range LoRa transmission, rapid cloud synchronization, and dependable automated pump protection during simulated dry-run and contamination events.
